I was born in El Paso, Texas in 1978.
Two days later, I was taken to Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, where I lived for the next nineteen years.
Everybody thinks their upbringing was something “special”… I feel the same about growing up in a border town, where not only two cities, but two countries co-existed with a hardly tangible border.
The whole area was a single place, a melting pot of american and mexican culture, underground organizations, illegal activity, manufacturing, unfettered government…
Thus, it was the perception that one always had the freedom to engage and adopt whichever aspect was most convenient, or pleasurable, from either country… ie. education and movie theaters in El Paso, and food and parties in Juarez.
From 1996 to 1998 I was on the course to becoming a civil engineer at the University of Texas at El Paso.
My love for engineering is predecessor to the cultivation of my design methodology and aspects of the science are inherently present in what I produce.
From 1998 to 2003 I attended the University of Arizona, in Tucson, where I obtained my Bachelor of Architecture. In that interim, in the Spring of 2002, I lived and studied in Copenhagen, Denmark. I had the privilege of traveling throughout all of scandinavia, visiting and studying the work of Alvar Aalto, Gunnar Asplund, and Jørn Utzon, amongst others.
Back in the United States, and after graduation, I interned at Alvidrez Architecture Inc., an architectural firm in El Paso, Texas.
Two years later I was back in school pursuing an MFA in Design from the University of Texas at Austin (2005-2007). I returned to Denmark in the summer of 2006 to study glass making as part of my materials research for my graduate work.
In late August I was on a plane back home… destination, Austin, Texas.
Upon returning (two days to be exact) I left Austin with six of my classmates and one professor to begin our 50 day journey into the Sonoran Desert, where we would live and make art (Land Arts 2006).
As a student and post graduate I worked at the offices of Andersson•Wise Architects, in Austin.
This experience presented me with the” real world” skills of crafting architectural details of exquisite quality. Surprisingly, I also came to love the world of interiors… ahh Mafi…….. (sigh)
Once again, I found myself in Juarez… how did that happen???…. sometimes it is good to return home, or necessary?
In that time I did some “architectural” free lancing and landed a job teaching 1 class at the community college in El Paso, and 2 in Las Cruces. If you can teach, do!.. it is the most fulfilling job I have ever had… bar none.
And now, I am living in Los Angeles, where I work, explore, create, love…
What does Enthus Design mean?
I get this question asked often enough that it deserves its own tab…
This page is still in development, but for now, I will leave you to contemplate the definition of enthusiasm, which is the root of Enthus Design.
